France’s favourite watch brands

Watchfinder is an Internet site specialising in the sale of second-hand watches. Each year, it records the key queries typed into Google concerning approximately 2,000 different watch references. Watchfinder unveils its new survey of Google’s data over the year between September 2019 and 2020. These figures make it possible to draw up a ranking of the favourite watch brands of the French.

The top 10 favourite watch brands of the French

Rolex continues its momentum. For several years now, the brand has been at the top of the podium. Watchfinder analyzed more than 4.8 million searches on Google France, or about 405,000 per month. Rolex alone accounts for 1.7 million requests, which represents 35% of total searches on luxury watches.

  • In1st place, the Submariner has 480,000 searches between 2019 and 2020. The reference diving watch is the model that proves the proximity of the Swiss company to the aquatic environment. The Submariner is an impeccably technical tool designed to accompany deep-sea adventurers since 1953.
  • In second place, the Daytona is just as mythical. This time, his technical prowess is being used for motorsports. The English pilot Sir Malcolm Campbell immortalized the first speed records during the Daytona races in Florida. By becoming a Rolex ambassador, he participated in the legend of the Rolex Daytona.
  • Inthird place, another Swiss manufacturer came out on top. It is Audemars Piguet with the Royal Oak that takes4th place ahead of the Rolex Datejust. Audemars Piguet’s watch, designed by Gérald Genta, got off to a slow start when it was created in 1973, before becoming an international success.
  • The Rolex Datejust was born in 1945. It was the first self-winding chronometer wristwatch to display the date.
  • The family company Patek Philippe, still Swiss, finds its place in the top 5 with the Nautilus watch. It was also designed by Genta in 1976, inspired by a porthole to embody sporting elegance. This jewel is now one of the favorite watches of the French. Its price varies between 27,000 and 411,000 euros depending on the model.
  • The Oyster Perpetual, the TAG Heuer Monaco, the Breitling Navitimer, the Day Date and finally the Santos by Cartier follow.

Rolex is still the leader in luxury watches here. The top five global searches include four watches from the brand with the crown.

The hegemony of Rolex

The reputation of the Rolex watch brand is confirmed by another ranking, that of Forbes France conducted with its collaborator Insightquest. The study is devoted to the behaviour and purchasing habits of French luxury consumers. While Chanel, Dior and Louis-Vuitton occupy the first three places in the top 20 of the French people’s favourite luxury brands, it is the watch brand Rolex that takes fourth place on the podium.

Montres Rolex popularité

The French luxury watch market remains in good health despite the covid and the period of uncertainty. According to Francéclat, sales in France are already increasing by 2% in 2019 and are generating a turnover of 5.6 billion euros. French know-how contributes to this dynamism. In 2019, the production of French watches increases by 9% and reaches 349 million of CA.
After a 20% drop in turnover in 2020 due to the exceptional situation of covid, the sector remains resilient and watchmaking continues to fascinate internet users.
